Discover Pila

We take a look at the purpose-built resort of Pila and see why it's so well suited for families and school groups.

Set in the Aosta Valley is the resort of Pila. A modern, purpose-built & car free resort and we take a look at what helps make this an ideal destination for families and school groups.

Just a 15 minute gondola ride from the the old Roman town of Aosta, Pila is an interesting mix of snow-sure & well groomed slopes that vary from blue to black. Although alot of the runs in Pila are red, it still provides a good progression for beginners to really challenge themselves after getting to grips with the blue runs.

The treeline is at 2300m and most of the runs fall below this, thus Pila is an excellent bad weather resort too. If you venture up the lifts on a good day, you'll enjoy the view of Mont Blanc to the west & the Matterhorn to the east as a reward! There are some black runs above the trees, but if you're a veteran you might not find these overly challenging. However, there are some excellent off-piste areas, tree skiing and a snow park available in the resort should you choose.

If you're a beginner, you'll be glad to know there is a wide & safe training area with a looped chairlift ideal for learning. In addition you can find restaurants at the top & bottom, so if you're a parent you can keep an eye on your kids and relax. A large play park surrounded by several more restaurants also provides entertainment for those with younger children.

A subtle, but important point is that you can't get lost. All the runs merge into the nursery slopes at the bottom so it doesn't take Bear Grylls to find your way off the slopes after a long day. The resort is also located close to Courmayeur; La Thuile & Cervinia are just a little further away. So, a day trip is a real possiblity if you want to experience as many new runs as you can.

In summary, Pila is ideal for beginners to really find their feet but can leave the more experienced skiers craving a challenge. Although, a few black runs, a snow park and some great off-piste are available for anyone looking for a change. The layout is pretty straight forward too, with all the runs merging at the bottom making rounding up the kids at the end of the day as simple as waiting at the bottom.
